Dr. Melissa Case-Vincent

Hello! I am Dr. Melissa Case-Vincent. I earned my Psy.D. (a doctoral degree) in Counseling Psychology from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.  I have in-depth training and specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and stress in children, adolescents, and adults. I utilize techniques under the models of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), parent-based treatment for children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, and related difficulties, incorporating mindfulness, and solution-focused techniques. I have also received specialized training in the assessment and treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) within various school districts and clinical settings. I provide comprehensive psychological evaluations for a range of learning, mood, and developmental concerns. Some of these include: autism, dyslexia, learning disabilities, independent educational evaluations, consultation, parent training, individual psychotherapy and couples therapy.

Assessment Statement

A psychoeducational or psychological evaluation can provide clarity regarding a diagnosis, an individual’s unique pattern of strengths and weaknesses, and appropriate treatment. I have experience in the assessment of autism spectrum disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, behavioral disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning and cognitive differences. I view the individual being assessed and/or caregivers as the most important part of the assessment team, while actively being involved throughout the process. When appropriate, I also strive to bring together perspectives from different professionals, family members, and educators to develop a more comprehensive picture. In my reports, I provide guidance regarding evidence-based treatments for specific diagnoses, educational materials and resources, academic accommodations, and guidelines for other treatment providers who may be involved in the long term treatment and goals.

Therapy Approach

My approach to therapy is interpersonal and collaborative. I strive to develop a strong therapeutic alliance that will better enable us to achieve the desired treatment goals. I have a strong interest in multicultural issues and working with diverse populations. Diversity not only consists of race or ethnicity but a myriad of other characteristics that make an individual unique. I integrate your personal history (narrative) and solution-focused goals to develop an individual treatment plan with you in order to facilitate growth.

My approach with children is from a family systems model, which emphasizes family relationships as an important factor to nurture change and development. I utilize play-based therapy along with solution-focused, CBT, and ACT techniques with children and their families. In couples therapy, I use John Gottman’s approach for assisting you in making your relationship work. Oftentimes, we come into our relationships with different values and childhood backgrounds. Similar to my work with individuals and families, I work to create short term goals with you to grow into the couple that you strive to be. Overall, as a therapist, I see myself as a facilitator in identifying your personal resources and providing a space to explore your inner strengths.
